Doctor of the Day Program

The North Carolina Medical Society needs physicians to volunteer to serve as the Doctor of the Day for each day when the North Carolina General Assembly is in Session. The General Assembly returns to Session on May 10, 2004.

Under this program, physicians are asked to spend one day in Raleigh providing basic first-aid services to legislators, staff members and visitors to the Legislative Building. More serious medical events are handled by local emergency medical personnel. All practice specialties are encouraged to participate. Many NCCEP members have participated in the past and they learned a lot about the legislative process and found it to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

As the legislative physician, the Doctor of the Day will be introduced in both the House and Senate chambers, offered floor privileges, given the opportunity to attend committee meetings and may visit with their local legislators throughout the day. In addition, volunteering your time to provide this valuable service enhances the image of the medical profession.

Physicians who have previously served as Doctor of the Day are welcome to return. Any physician interested in participating in the program is encouraged to call Jean Lewis at (919) 833-3836 or (800) 722-1350 or e-mail at jlewis@ncmedsoc.org.
